In an effort to reduce the fires, the City Council on Thursday approved the creation of a new trade-in program for lithium-ion batteries.
The program will make it easier for New Yorkers to swap their e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries for those that meet industry standards, either for free or at a low cost.
The Fire Department reports there have been 180 lithium battery fires this year so far. The fires have also killed 14 New Yorkers this year, according to officials.
Councilman Keith Powers, who serves as majority leader of the City Council, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to discuss more.
He represents parts of Manhattan, from the Upper East Side down to Midtown, Murray Hill and Stuyvesant Town.
