All non-emergency personnel and families were ordered to leave the country on July 27 as armed clashes rocked the capital city of Port-Au-Prince.

This comes amid the high-profile kidnapping of an American nurse and her daughter, with authorities saying they are still working to get them back.

Meanwhile, Haitians have been hitting the streets, calling on kidnappers to free them.

Garry Pierre-Pierre, a Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist and founder of the Haitian Times, sat down with NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to talk more about the future of the island nation.

“The country needs a functioning justice system, a judiciary, so that we can get back on the track for elections and call Haiti a democracy once again,” Pierre-Pierre said.
