Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch joined NY1 Monday morning championing a new trash rule: restaurants and other food businesses must now put out all garbage in containers instead of trash bags.

It’s part of a larger effort to reduce the rat population and keep city streets clean.

Meanwhile, Monday also marked the first day the city began its effort to reduce takeout waste.

Restaurants won’t be offering plastic utensils, condiments, or napkins in takeout and delivery orders, unless a customer requests it.

In both cases, businesses will be fined if they don’t comply.

Andrew Rigie, the executive director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, joined NY1 political reporter Bobby Cuza on “Inside City Hall” to talk more about these new regulations.

“I think New Yorkers in general, while we don’t like and want garbage bags everywhere, we may not also think the solution is thousands of individuals garbage containers there,” Rigie said. “We think there’s a broader, a better way to do this.”
