Yusef Salaam has secured a win for the Democratic primary for City Council District 9 in Harlem.
He will succeed incumbent Councilwoman Kristin Richardson Jordan, who announced she was not running for reelection before Primary Day.
Salaam came up just short of the 50% threshold to win the race after the first round of vote counting, but the ranked-choice voting tabulation widened his lead over state Assemblywoman Inez Dickens.
He is one of the Exonerated Five, who was wrong convicted in the rape of a jogger in Central Park in 1989.
Salaam joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Wednesday to discuss his win.
“As a first-time candidate, I feel like I did everything right,” he said. “I think walking around the neighborhood, having the voices of the people letting you know where their pain points were, was really important for me.”
