As the city sees an uptick in violent crime in the subway system over the past few weeks, community advocates are calling for action. Danny Pearlstein, the policy and communications director of the Riders Alliance, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” to discuss ways to improve rider safety across the five boroughs.
Subway platform doors—which will soon be tested at three stations in the city—are only part of the puzzle, according to Pearlstein. He is also calling on the MTA to offer more off-peak trains and increase accessibility at subway stations. Pearlstein says those improvements will help increase ridership and help with public safety. And as the city’s new subway plan goes into effect, Pearlstein also emphasized the importance of creating more permanent housing for homeless New Yorkers so that they do not have to depend on trains for shelter.
