NEW YORK — Last week, Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, who represents Manhattan's West Side, announced that he will retire after his term comes to an end next year.
Gottfried has made history as the longest-serving legislator in New York state. He was first elected to the state Assembly in 1970, and has held the position for over 50 years. During his half-century as a legislator, he has sponsored more than 500 bills that have become law, and has been the chair of the health committee since the late-1980s.
Gottfried joined NY1's Bobby Cuza on "Inside City Hall" on Thursday evening to reflect on his career.
