It has been 10 years since Tony Hillery took a volunteer job at a New York City public school and saw students without enough to eat living in food deserts in one of the wealthiest cities in the world. That inspired him to start Harlem Grown, one of the city’s most successful and best-loved urban farm programs. They build farms, community gardens and greens spaces throughout Harlem, teaching children how to grow nutritious food, sustainably and giving them life lessons that improve everything about their educational experience. He joins In Focus, along with Executive Director Nicole Engel, to celebrate the achievements of Harlem Grown in the past decade as it became a worldwide model for nutrition education, and the achievements of the students who have been part of the program. And they talk about the future, including a new mobile kitchen truck that can bring all the benefits of food education directly to the people who need it most, and ide borne out of the isolation of the pandemic.
