Camille Joseph Varlack, Mayor Eric Adams’ chief of staff, kicked off Women’s History Month with “In Focus.”
Varlack emigrated to the United States as a child from Trinidad and Tobago.
She explained how her mother inspired her career in City Hall and her work in public service.
Varlack discussed the migrant crisis in the city. Since last spring, more than 48,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City.
Improving the quality of early childhood education has also been a priority for the Adams administration. They created the first office of child care and early childhood education.
Varlack explained how the administration’s helping women return to the workforce and giving families the support they need to flourish.
Adams has placed women of color in positions they may have not been traditionally chosen for in the past. Varlack explained why that’s important for the city and how the administration is breaking down barriers for women.
