Kevin Alexander, the president of the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation, and Rosalyn Mason, the vice president of Queens Royal Priest Hood, join “In Focus” to mark 10 years since Hurricane Sandy.

Alexander discussed the devastation he witnessed first-hand and how the Rockaways are still rebuilding today.

Created in 1978 to address the worsening social and economic conditions, the RDRC improves the quality of life for residents in the Rockaways. The Queens Royal Priest Hood is also based in the Rockaways, providing underserved communities with opportunities in sports, the arts and entertainment. Mason explained how the organization has helped those recovering from Hurricane Sandy, especially those in underserved communities.

She discussed the resources and support the QRPH provides to our city’s youth to reach their potential. The organization offers academic readiness, character development, and social development. Mason also explained how it’s creating safer, more compassionate neighborhoods.

Downtown Far Rockaway is of particular concern because it’s outside the FEMA flood protection zone. Alexander talked about how the revitalization corporation is helping to improve the quality of life there post-Sandy, including the many commercial revitalization projects in Downtown Far Rockaway. The corporation also provides youth services, including workforce development and neighborhood preservation.
