Former City Councilman Daniel Dromm and Manhattan City Councilwoman Gale Brewer join “In Focus” to reflect on some of the most noteworthy events NY1 has covered, including the children of the rainbow curriculum.

The 443-page curriculum featured three pages of LGBTQ+ related content. When NY1 first went on the air, parents voiced their outrage over the new curriculum. It was introduced as a guide for first-grade classrooms to promote acceptance of the city’s racially diverse communities, but the curriculum set off city-wide controversies.

Dromm explains why and how it inspired him to come out as gay and become politically active. He is one of the first two openly gay city council members outside of Manhattan.

When NY1 first went on the air in 1992, Brewer was serving as the director of the New York City Office of Federal Relations under Mayor David Dinkins. She discusses her start in city politics and reflects on some of her biggest accomplishments over the years.

Brewer represents District 6 in the city council, including the Upper West Side. She also was the 27th Manhattan Borough President from 2014 to 2021. Gentrification has been a top topic for Manhattan through the decades. She explains how she’s tackling the issue and how the issue has developed over the years.
