Queens Councilmember Linda Lee joined “In Focus” Sunday to mark Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Lee is the first woman of color to hold office in District 23 and one of the first two Korean-Americans elected to the city council. As the chair of the Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities and Addictions, she discusses the canceled plans for two Chinatown homeless shelters after fierce pushback from residents. Many feared the shelters would lead to a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Lee also discusses the transitional housing that’s needed instead, why she believes there’s a problem with people in New York City thinking the AAPI community are “easy targets,” and what needs to be done to combat the hate.
