"Star Trek" actor George Takei joined “In Focus” Sunday to talk about his role as the first grand marshal of the city's inaugural Japan Parade on May 14th.

The parade will celebrate and bring awareness to the friendship between New York and Japan. The parade also marks the 150th anniversary of two important milestones: the Japanese mission to the U.S. and our introduction of baseball to Japan.

Takeo discusses the significance of those events and shares his thoughts on what needs to be done to combat anti-Asian hate and how the parade can help foster grass-roots connections within the community. During World War II, Takei spent his childhood unjustly imprisoned in U.S. internment camps along with hundreds of other Japanese Americans. Having served on the board of Japan-United States friendship, he discusses how that horrific experience has inspired his advocacy and humanitarian work today. He also shares how New Yorkers can take part in the parade.
