Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn shines a spotlight on black maternal health care and black maternal mortality.

In 2016, she was turned away from a hospital while giving birth. Her son, Jonah Bichotte Cowan, lost his life a few days later and she nearly lost her own.

Bichotte Hermelyn discusses the tragic day and why her story is one of far too many for black women.

She also talks about the disparities between black and white women in maternal health care, how the Jonah Bichotte Cowan Law has helped those with concerns about pre-term labor and what more needs to be done.

As the first African American woman to lead a county party in New York City.
