Yes, this is a history-making City Council: the most diverse ever and for the first time the majority of members, 31 out of 51, are women. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams admits, that was not an accident.

Advocacy groups have fought long and hard to bring more women into the fold, and this year, their hard work payed off. Adams speaks with Cheryl Wills about why having more women join the Council matters.  She talks about her statement that, “women govern differently than men," saying women legislate with compassion.

She also talks about the road that led her to the leadership of the Council and the support she received throughout her life from her own mother, who encouraged her in everything she did (including her music, and we’re treated to a small sample of her amazing voice). It is a rare glimpse into a City Council leader, offering a greater understand of how she intends to lead.
