Adriano Espaillat has represented Washington Heights in the Assembly, the State Senate and now Congress for more than two decades.  You can feel his love for this neighborhood in every word he says  Espaillat joins In Focus to talk about his battle to bring the issues facing The Heights to the attention of his fellow Congress members.  Espaillat has hosted screenings of “In the Heights” for his colleagues, to give them an idea of the beauty and the struggles of his ‘hood, to show them why it matters.  He speaks of the creeping gentrification as older, affordable housing gives way to luxury digs.  Espaillat says that so far, for the most part, gentrification has been stopped at the boundaries of the Heights, but without more affordable housing, will that remain the case?  But mainly, he talks about the neighborhood he grew up in and loves to this day, hours spend skating at Audubon Terrace or swimming at the Highbridge Pool, and how proud he is to see the locations he loved and knows so well, featured in a film that so many across the country will now see for themselves.
