As Asian American Pacific Islander Month comes to a close, In Focus looks at some of the issues facing the AAPI community in New York City, most notably the alarming rise in hate crimes against Asians.

Andrew Yang is the son of Taiwanese immigrants, a businessman, former presidential candidate and is now making a run for the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor.

Yang joined In Focus to speak about anti-Asian hate, and what he believes should be done to stop it. He said the Asian Hate Crimes Task Force needs to be “fully funded” because it is now made up of volunteers.

They are NYPD detectives of Asian descent, speaking 10 different Asian languages.  Yang also talks about his plan to cut homelessness in half in the city, saying half the crimes against Asians are committed by the mentally ill. He also says he has spoken with many victims of anti-Asian hate who are afraid to walk around the city.
