Educating New York City’s kids is a big, complex and often confusing issue. So big, in fact, that In Focus is devoting two shows to the subject. In Part I, our panels talk about Education Equity, and why there is such a divide between the city’s best performing schools, and the worst. Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League speaks to the issues that divide education. Why is it that, with a student population that is 41% Hispanic and 26% Black, those students comprise only 10% of the kids in the city’s Specialized High Schools? Is getting rid of the SHSATs, the only criterion for admission to an elite school, the solution? And why, 65 years after Brown vs. Board of Education integrated the country’s public schools, is New York City’s among the most segregated school systems in the country? Bottom line: if we believe all students deserve a good education, why aren’t we making that happen?
