Among those health organizations that decided to forego Title X funding rather than deny their patients full disclosure is New York City Health + Hospitals, the largest public health care system in the United States. NYC H+H is committed to treating every patient, regardless of race, religion, immigration status or the ability to pay. They’ve been around since 1736 and care for 1.4 million patients a year, half a million of whom are uninsured. Any loss of funding will be felt. But, Dr. Wendy Wilcox says, we are lucky we live in New York, where the city and state step up to cover the losses. Alicia Hyndman is one of the legislators helping that cause. She actively helped to pass the Reproductive Health Act, designed to strengthen a woman’s right to choose and requiring insurers to provide for cost-free contraception. She also helped pass a law that prevents employers from discriminating against women based on their reproductive choices. Both guests talk about the importance of protecting a woman’s right to health care, and to freedom of choice, at a time when those rights seem to be under constant assault.
