From broken windows and swastikas painted on synagogues to vile message scrawled outside of mosques, the level of hate crimes in New York City is on the rise. What is driving this? And how do we stop it? Chaim Deutsch and Robert Jackson represent very diverse sections of New York City. Deutsch is an Orthodox Jew, and Jackson is African American and Muslim. They talk about their own personal experiences with hate and those of their constituents. While the reasons for hate crimes can range from bored kids to a deep fear of the city’s changing demographics, they address the change in political language, the personal attacks on politicians because of their race, gender, sexuality or religion. It’s happening more often, it’s uglier than ever. Our guests discuss how it affects actual people, and whether there is any way to stop it.
