It’s something theatergoers don’t see every day: members of the Australian theater collective Pony Cam feverishly working on treadmills during a performance of their creation, "Burnout Paradise." It’s at St. Ann’s Warehouse in DUMBO.
“As we are running on the treadmills, we are trying to complete a bunch of other tasks, like we cook and serve a three course meal, we brush our teeth we, sometimes we shave, I have had my head shaved in a few shows,” company member William Strom explained
What You Need To Know
- "Burnout Paradise" is a new show running at St. Ann's Warehouse in DUMBO from Australian theater collective Pony Cam
- It kicks off St. Ann's Warehouse's 45th season
- During the show, four cast members complete various tasks on treadmills with help from the audience
Every night, the quartet are trying to beat their personal best running distance, too. It’s the North American premiere of the show, kicking off the 45th season at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
Founder and artistic director Susan Feldman says she and general manager Erik Wallin decided to bring the show over after seeing it at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer.
“They are so spontaneous and so giving in each task that they are doing, but then they are so tired after each part and so honest about it, and when they are drinking the water, everybody is identifying with them, so it becomes a real, it’s not just community building its we are all in this together,” Feldman said.
Ava Campbell is the only cast member not on the treadmill. She is the host, time keeper, mess cleaner-upper, and communicator with the audience, who play a huge part in the show, In fact if the cast doesn’t reach their goals, they offer a full refund.
“A lot of people are able to reflect into the piece and say, that is my life, I feel like I am on a treadmill, all my life managing multiple things,” said Campbell, who says only a tiny percentage of audience members actually ask for the refund.
