The Rock and Roll Playhouse has been bringing families together for live music for nearly a decade.

“It basically started as a music school curriculum, that kind of thing, and it gradually evolved into what we have now, which is a concert series for families, kids, their parents to just rock out, have fun,” Anna Ayers, general manager, said. 

The Rock and Roll Playhouse was launched in 2014 at the Brooklyn Bowl by concert promoter Peter Shapiro and educator Amy Striem. Ayers said the first show featured bassist and Grateful Dead founding member Phil Lesh. Since then, the shows have spotlighted a wide variety of bands and performers.

“Every Sunday we have a different show. Anywhere from Taylor Swift to David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, a lot of really fun stuff," Ayers said. "My particular favorite is David Bowie because the parents get these kids dressed up and they just look spectacular when they come through."

The Rock and Roll Playhouse has become a national family concert series, with over 1,500 shows in more than 80 venues since it’s founding. The shows are held weekly at the Brooklyn Bowl during most of the year, and every other Sunday in the summer.

“Getting these kids started early to come out to shows is fantastic, and it’s a great opportunity for families to really connect,” Ayers said, who noted a Father’s Day celebration is coming up featuring the music of the Grateful Dead. 

Tickets are $17 and children under the age of one are free.
