Many say cherry blossom blooms are a highlight of spring. Currently, the Cherry Esplanade at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden has four rows of Kanzan Cherry Trees, all in peak bloom and just some of the more than 200 cherry trees at the garden.

“The blossoms — when they are up close, it’s amazing how nature just does that,” garden visitor Evelyn Gonzalez said.

“This is a big traditional moment at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. We have been known pretty much since we opened 110 years ago for a great cherry tree collection and we do have the widest variety of cherry trees of any planting in New York City. [It’s] really one of the finest collections outside of Washington D.C., and maybe similar in a certain scope and variety,” Adrian Benepe, president and CEO at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, said.

The garden has extended hours through May 12. Its "Weekends in Bloom" events, which feature pop-up music, dance performances, cultural programs and plenty of family activities, take place over the next three weekends.

While the cherry trees are the stars of the show, Benepe said that’s not all that’s blooming during this time of year.

“We’ve got a fabulous, very large tulip display this spring, commemorating the 400th anniversary of New Amsterdam. We’ve got azaleas blooming, the lilacs have just sprung into full bloom quite early, so lots and lots of things blooming right now at Brooklyn Botanic Garden,” Benepe said.
