Dancing skeletons, aerialists, plenty of skulls are all part of a tribute to the Day of the Dead in Brooklyn. Appropriately, the show is called "Day of the Dead Live!" at Brooklyn Art Haus in Williamsburg.

It’s a celebration of the Mexican holiday of family remembrance, featuring Mexican folk music and classical music from Mexico and around the world performed by Pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner.

What You Need To Know

  • "Day of the Dead Live!" is a musical tribute to the Mexican holiday of family remembrance

  • It runs at Brooklyn Art Haus in Williamsburg through Nov. 1

  • The show features Mexican folk and classical music from Mexico and elsewhere performed by Pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, accompanied by puppeteers, dancers, jugglers and stilt-walkers

  • Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico for centuries and by people of Mexican heritage in the United States and around the world

The virtuoso who has played for two presidents is Mexican-American and grew up celebrating the holiday with his family.

“Feeling the connection to it from a young age, it’s something I’m excited to share with people,” Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, musical director for the show that features dance and puppetry from an all-star team of performers, said.

Performer Agave L’amour is from Mexico, and says the team assembled is inspired by the traditions of her homeland, but adds their own individual magic.

“What we are doing with this is [to] invite people and remember people to enjoy life, because death is part of life too,” L’amour, who dances and is an assisting choreographer for the show, said.

Artistic Director and aerialist Juanita Cardenas hopes the one-hour performance will bring some thrills, chills and joy to those in attendance.

“I just hope that people have an hour to feel happy and inspired and maybe a little bit scared at the moment when there're ghosts or things that are creepy,” Cardenas said.

Sanchez-Werner hopes the show appeals to those of Mexican heritage and others who want to know more about the traditions and culture of Mexico.

“We want people who know what they are going to hear to feel celebrated seen and heard, and we want people who have no idea what to expect to come with open minds and open hearts, ready to have fun,” Sanchez-Werner said.
