It would be hard not to see one of the inhabitants of the new Bronx Zoo exhibit called Budgie Landing.

The exhibit showcases over 1,000 of the colorful birds inside the aviary exhibit space.

Budgies are small parrots or parakeets, as they are commonly known. There are plenty of them flying around.

“There are over a thousand birds here that you can get up close to and feed in this large exhibit, they are flying around they love to fly in flocks so actually the large number is something they would be used to in the wild,” Courtnie Bronson, Assistant Supervisor of Animal Encounters at the Bronx Zoo, said.

What You Need To Know

  • Budgie Landing is a new exhibit at the Bronx Zoo

  • Budgies are small parrots, commonly known as parakeets

  • There are more than 1,000 budgies in the exhibit

  • Budgies are native to the grasslands and woodlands of Australia

Budgies are native to the grasslands and woodlands of Australia and the aviary mimics that habitat.

Native budgies would be green and yellow, but over the years they have been bred to be different colors, displayed by the wide variety in the exhibit. It’s an immersive and very interactive experience, thanks to feed sticks visitors get featuring the birds’ favorite seed.

There is a good chance a bird may just pay a visit, since they are very curious.

“Best thing to do is relax just like this, sometimes they will fly if you hold the stick right up to the branch they will fly right to the stick, sometimes they prefer to just be on the branch, and then you feed them right from the branch,” Bronson said.

The exhibit opens this month, and goes through October annually.
