Monday marks one year since the deadly Twin Parks fire in the Bronx that killed 17 people.

On Monday's anniversary, the community will come together to observe a day of remembrance and rename a street "17 Abdoulie Touray Way."

The new street sign will bear the number 17 to represent the number of victims from the fire. Touray, on the other hand, is the name of the first Gambian to move into the Twin Parks North West apartment building. Some credit Touray for recruiting many Gambian residents to live in the complex.

Many who died in the fire were immigrants from Gambia and other West African countries.

"It's my understanding that the families, and in this building, there were many, but they were pretty close," Bronx Assemblymember Kenny Burgos said. "And this one gentleman, Abdoulie Touray, was renowned for really connecting that community."

Burgos and state Senator Cordell Clear backed a space heater safety bill after the tragic fire. It was signed into law back in December by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The legislation will require electric space heaters sold in the state to have a thermostat, include an automatic shutdown and be certified.

"It's our responsibility to make sure that we can prevent anything like this happening again," Burgos said. "It’s our hope that once this law was enacted, we will hopefully never see a fire again from [a] space heater.”

The street renaming will happen at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and Rep. Ritchie Torres are expected to attend.
