A Staten Island man is making a name for himself sampling New York's Italian cuisines one cannoli at a time.
Danny Mondello, known by his TikTok handle Meals by Cug — a play off cugine, Italian slang for cousin — exploded on social media in the last year as fans clamored for his over-the-top food reviews and catchphrases like “take care, brush your hair,” as he says at the end of each video.
"I moved off campus to college, decided to make a food page Meals by Cug, and just play around with it. And then TikTok came out and I accidentally exploded," Mondello told NY1 Sunday morning.
None of the businesses Mondello patronizes get bad reviews. He often ranks each meal anywhere from eight to 12 out of five "madones," slang for Madonna, the Virgin Mary.
"It's not in my business to put someone down," Mondello said. "People put their blood, sweat and tears into their business. I don't want to put them down so just rise everyone up."
Mondello went to college upstate and studied accounting. He lasted five days at an accounting job post-graduation before quitting to work in a kitchen, he said. A side project making funny videos about food has now turned into a full-blown career.
"All of a sudden, I just go on TikTok, upload a few videos, beep, bop, boop, and next thing you know, I'm this big food influencer," Mondello said. "It was almost like overnight. I mean, it took five years to happen overnight, but it was never meant for this. It was just for giggles."
