At first glance, a large group of women walking together on a Sunday afternoon might appear to be longtime friends.
But many of them are actually meeting for the first time. They are part of a new club called City Girls Who Walk.
"Every time I do this and I see brand new faces each time, it's actually life-changing. It's so cool," said Brianna Kohn, who started the walking club because she noticed people struggling to make friends during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kohn posted a video to her TikTok account to get the word out, inviting anyone who was interested to join her for Sunday strolls at Hudson River Park. Little did she know the turnout would be massive.
"Sometimes, I think, it's like a protest. Every single person is saying, 'What is this going on?' Because we take over the entire West Side Highway," Kohn said.
"I moved here a little less than a month ago and just trying to meet new people," said Ariana Feldman, a Crown Heights resident.
Now, other cities are following, launching City Girls Who Walk Boston, D.C. and Orlando — just to name a few.
"I was just in the neighborhood, and I heard about it on Instagram and I thought, 'why not put myself out there?'" said Paige Freeman, a Murray Hill resident.
"I mean, we were all nervous at first, to be honest with you. But we all know the goal is to make friends, but we all kind of get bonded by the vulnerability. Now I know like 10 people from City Girls Who Walk," said Hazeera Rosli, a resident of the Financial District.
As for Kohn, she plans to eventually expand the walking club to include networking events, game nights and fitness classes.
And just maybe, the city girls who started walking together will also dine together, travel together and make more memories together for years to come.
The walking club takes place every Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hudson River Park's Pier 45.
