- She continues to stay very active in the CNY community, helping people achieve their goals through music
Dr. Joan Hillsman, a 77-year old woman, motivates the people around her through music, which she believes can bring people up when they’re feeling a little down.
"Starting as a young child, being able to play in church in South Carolina," said Hillsman.
From South Carolina to Central New York, this well-traveled retired professor has taught music for more than 60 years.
Today you won't find this 77-year old sitting still. From leading the Joan Hillsman Music Network in Syracuse, to nursing homes and schools, she shares her knowledge with people of all ages.
“And, I will continue, to write books, to write the textbooks, to mentor, and to get involved in the community. To get other people tell them hey you can pick up your dreams and walk," said Hillsman.
It's not the accolades or her many awards that keep her going, but rather, a motivation to help others.
"She has a lot of talents, from her talent to bring people together and be on the Zoom, even with social distancing, she's still been able to get the point across in music," said her friend Shirley Rowser.
It's her continued work, encouraging others to believe in themselves, that matters to her most.
"Pick up your dreams and walk, I can't play, I can't do this, yes you can do it," said Hillsman.
Dr, Hillsman is the mother of Syracuse University women's basketball coach Quenton Hillsman.
