A landlord who the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development says has repeatedly landed on city lists of the five boroughs’ worst landlords has turned himself in to local authorities and will serve jail time, the city’s sheriff’s office said Thursday.
Daniel Ohebshalom is being transported to Rikers Island, the city’s sheriff’s office said. He will serve up to 60 days in jail at Rikers unless he corrects “nearly 700 violations” at two buildings, at 705 and 709 W. 170th St. in Washington Heights, according to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, or HPD.
According to HPD, conditions at the buildings included “visible peeling lead paint, roach and mice infestations, inadequate electricity supply, and mold.”
“The NYC Sheriff’s Office will continue to work with our partners at HPD to arrest these egregious offenders who disregard the health and safety concerns of our community,” NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda wrote in a statement.
An arrest warrant was issued for Ohebshalom earlier this month after it was determined that he failed to comply with a civil contempt finding from February 2023, according to HPD and court documents.
"This administration is committed to New Yorkers having safe, quality, affordable housing, and landlords cannot evade their responsibility to tenants and City law," Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer wrote in a statement. "Daniel Ohebshalom's arrest, following his years' long neglect in fixing housing violations, is an important lesson to anyone who allows unacceptable housing conditions to persist."
NY1 has made attempts to reach out to Ohebshalom’s legal representation and has not yet heard back.
