The Lower Eastside Girls Club is "transforming self-care into community care" by opening up a brand new center.

The Center for Wellbeing and Happiness was unveiled Friday in a ceremony.

Elected officials, staff and supporters spoke about the the need for more programs that offer help and services in the city.

"It wasn't until the pandemic upended the globe that we began to think deeply about the disparities in health and wellness for marginalized communities of color. But the Girls Club, we've centered the health and well-being of our members since its founding," Ebonie Simpson, the club's co-executive director, said.

"And I know as a community, it's going to be up to us to heal and to care for each other, which is one of the main things in terms of what this center really does represent," Councilwoman Carlina Rivera said.

Plans for the new center began back in 2018.

The 5,000 square-foot facility now joins the club's existing 35,000 square feet of space on Avenue D in the East Village.

The new hub will serve the community with wellness options regardless of gender or age.

The Lower Eastside Girls Club is known for offering free youth empowerment programs all year long.
