1. Fire officials discuss growing threat of lithium-ion batteries
Top fire officials today held a symposium at the FDNY Fire Academy on Randall’s Island to address the threat lithium-ion batteries pose to the public.
During the two-day conference, members of the FDNY worked with national and federal partners to study how these fires start and look at best methods to contain them.
2. Diner near Yankee Stadium is buzzing with Yankees fans during World Series
For some heading into Yankee Stadium, Court Deli is a necessary pit stop. It's the longtime diner two blocks east of Yankee Stadium, at 161 Street and Walton Avenue.
Greece-born and Bronx-raised Peter Katsihtis has been the owner for nearly three decades. He told NY1's Noorulain Khawaja the Yankees don’t just play in the Bronx — they’re part of the neighborhood, giving back to their Bronx community.
3. Council Speaker Adams breaks down this year's ballot proposals
While the presidential race is motivating plenty of voters to head to the polls this year, many city and state officials are trying to raise awareness about what’s on the other side of the ballot.
New Yorkers are being asked to vote on several key measures, including Proposal 1, which would expand statewide civil rights protections. There are also five amendments to New York City’s charter — Proposals 2 through 6 — some of which would give more control to the mayor.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who joined “Mornings On 1” today, explained where she has landed on each of them.
4. Stroke survivor to run first New York City Marathon this year
The road to recovery after a stroke can be long and challenging. In 2015, Johnny Pye suffered a stroke at home while caring for his daughter. Pye was just 32 years old, and the stroke left him disabled.
NY1’s Estefania Hernandez spoke with Pye about how he used his recovery to start running. Now, he’s preparing for the New York City Marathon this weekend.
5. Rising tech stocks send Nasdaq to a record
Rallying technology stocks sent the Nasdaq composite to a record today, but trading was mixed along the rest of Wall Street as homebuilders and Ford Motor sank following the latest profit reports.
The S&P 500 rose 0.2% to inch closer to its all-time high set earlier this month, even though most of the stocks in the index fell for the day.
