Today's Big Stories

1. Judge delays Donald Trump's sentencing in hush money case until after election

A judge has agreed to postpone Donald Trump's sentencing in his hush money case until after the November election, granting him a hard-won reprieve as he navigates the aftermath of his criminal conviction and the homestretch of his presidential campaign.

Manhattan Judge Juan M. Merchan, who is also weighing a defense request to overturn the verdict on immunity grounds, delayed Trump's sentencing until Nov. 26, three weeks after the final votes are cast in the presidential election.

2. Trump in court as lawyers fight to overturn verdict in E. Jean Carroll sex abuse suit

Veering from the campaign trail to a courtroom, Donald Trump quietly observed today as one of his lawyers fought to overturn a verdict finding the former president liable for sexual abuse and defamation.

The Republican nominee and accuser E. Jean Carroll, a writer, sat at tables about 15 feet apart, in a federal appeals court. He didn't acknowledge or look at Carroll as he passed directly in front of her on the way in and out, but he shook his head at points, such as when Carroll's attorney said he sexually attacked her.

3. Legal expert weighs in on FBI raids of Adams' aides

During an appearance on "Mornings On 1" today, criminal defense attorney Jeremy Saland provided insight into the recent FBI raids on Mayor Eric Adams’ top aides, saying that they show a larger issue within the administration.

The FBI on Thursday executed search warrants at the homes of two of Adams' closest aides, First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks.

4. Another rout hits Wall Street, as S&P 500 heads for its worst week in 18 months

Another rout is hitting Wall Street today, and technology stocks are taking the brunt of it after a jobs report billed as the most important of the year came in mixed.

The S&P 500 was 1.6% lower in midday trading and heading for its worst week since March 2023. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 367 points, or 0.9%, as of 11:55 a.m. Eastern time, after flipping an early gain of 250 points. The Nasdaq composite sank 2.4% as Broadcom, Nvidia and other tech companies led the market lower on continued worries that their prices soared too high in the boom around artificial-intelligence tech.

5. Jessica Pegula will meet Aryna Sabalenka in the U.S. Open women’s final Saturday

Back in January, when Aryna Sabalenka was winning a second consecutive Australian Open title, Jessica Pegula was bowing out in the second round with a straight-set loss against someone ranked 51st.

It wasn’t the first setback for Pegula, of course. There have been many of those through the years, from assorted injuries to difficult-to-digest defeats. Look at her now, though: On Saturday, the No. 6-seeded Pegula will face No. 2 Sabalenka for the championship at the U.S. Open.
