Former President Donald Trump made a video appearance today in his New York criminal case, with the judge tentatively setting a trial date for March 25, 2024.
The trial date comes at a crucial point in the 2024 election primary season, during which Trump will once again be running for the Republican nomination.
2. Source: N.Y. to house migrants at dorms on three SUNY campuses
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration has identified dorms on three SUNY campuses to use as housing sites for migrants, according to a source. The source told NY1 the plan includes a total of 1,500 beds at the University at Buffalo, Stony Brook University and the University at Albany.
An announcement is expected as soon as next week, the source said.
3. DeSantis to announce 2024 bid in Twitter chat with Elon Musk
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is set to formally announce his long-anticipated presidential campaign on Wednesday in a conversation with Twitter owner Elon Musk, a source confirmed to Spectrum News.
The announcement was first reported by NBC News. Musk seemed to confirm the report by retweeting a Fox News reporter's post on the platform about the event.
4. How New York could provide tax relief for student borrowers
New York state could soon be providing some tax relief for people who are carrying federal student loan debt.
A bill approved this week in the Democratic-controlled state Senate is meant to ensure student loan forgiveness programs would be exempt from state income taxes.
5. Advocates want to revamp how New York's schools are funded
Public education advocates at the Alliance for Quality Education want to overhaul how New York's schools are funded — addressing a 16-year-old formula that could alter the trajectory for many districts in the state.
The group on Monday released a report that included a list of recommendations for state education officials to take as well as for lawmakers, while also addressing the methodology of how schools are funded.
6. Aaron Rodgers warms up, but doesn't practice for Jets in first session open to media
Aaron Rodgers never made it past warmups in his first New York Jets practice in front of the media.
The 39-year-old quarterback, acquired last month from Green Bay, participated in early stretching and did other exercises today before he watched quarterback drills. Rodgers remained on the field during practice, but was without his helmet and threw no passes.
