NEW YORK — It's the stuff stage lore is made of: An actor is unable to perform because of a breakthrough case of COVID-19 — so the show's playwright steps in with minutes to curtain to save the show from being canceled.

What You Need To Know

  • Playwright of "Thoughts of A Colored Man," Keenan Scott II had to step in for an actor who tested positive for COVID-19

  • It happened less than 15 minutes before the show was supposed to start

  • This was his Broadway acting debut

  • He went on stage with the script to make sure he could deliver a strong performance

Speaking with Stephanie Simon on "News All Day" on Thursday, Keenan Scott II recalled his story. He was at the Port Authority on Tuesday, heading home, when he got the call that he was needed to fill in. He turned around, went back to the Golden Theatre and walked on stage with script in hand to perform in his play, "Thoughts of A Colored Man." The audience loved it.

Scott, who is from Queens, told NY1 he always dreamed of performing on Broadway.

So, he says, he'll walk around with his cellphone turned on in case he's ever needed again.
