Up until the Broadway shutdown, actress Mandy Gonzalez has been starring as Angelica Schuyler in "Hamilton" on Broadway. She's also well known for her turn as Elphaba in "Wicked," and was part of the original cast of Tony Award-winning musical "In the Heights."

In January, Gonzalez announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She now is co-hosting a five-part virtual series called "Broadway's Best for Breast Cancer," featuring special guests as well as health care experts.

The series kicked off on June 1 and features other Broadway stars like Krysta Rodriguez and Kerry Butler. This coming Monday's show features Tony Award-winner James Monroe Iglehart.

“He and his wife Dawn have been some of my biggest supporters,” Gonzalez says. “I’m excited because James does everything with so much grace and he’s just the best, so I’m excited to lend his voice to this series.”

She is hosting the series with Caroline Kohles, senior director of health and wellness programming at the Manhattan JCC.

Gonzalez says helping others has become part of her healing process.

"I think it's important for people that are watching, and family members that are watching, to know that to ask questions and know what can we do to help when somebody is diagnosed, especially during this time, to offer support," she says.

As for the current Broadway shutdown, Gonzalez says the show must go on. And while they can't perform on stage, they're still finding ways to make a difference.
