Character actor George Gaynes, who joined the New York City Opera before turning his sights on TV and film, has died.
The New York Times reports Gaynes died on Monday in Washington.
He was best known for his role as a grumpy foster dad on the TV series "Punky Brewster."
On the big screen, he played a soap opera star who became obsessed with Dustin Hoffman in the 1982 hit "Tootsie."
He also played a big role as the commandant in six "Police Academy" movies, and appeared in popular soap operas like General Hospital.
The Finland-born actor was raised in Europe where he first started his career performing opera.
He arrived in the city after World War II and retired in 2003.
George Gaynes was 98 years old.
