One of the city’s top performing arts schools is ending its drama program early due to a lack of funding, according to the Waterwell Theatre Company.

Waterwell runs the drama program at The Professional Performing Arts School in Hell’s Kitchen.

The group’s leadership confirmed they’re being hit with a 20% budget cut, meaning they won’t be able to hold classes after April 12, according to an email that parents shared with NY1.

Several end-of-year performances will also be canceled.

The city Department od Education insists the change is actually because it’s looking for a new provider, claiming Waterwell’s proposed price was above the school’s budget.

Waterwell did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but the DOE released a statement.

“A rigorous theater arts program continues to be a priority for PPAS, the school will host end of year performances, and dedicated staff will continue to support students in their drama education through the end of standard academic year program, which ends on April 30, while the school sources a new partner for the next academic year,” Jenna Lyle, a DOE spokeswoman, said.
