An exclusive Spectrum News NY1/Ipsos poll shows that 50% of potential voters are still undecided when it comes to the race for city comptroller. But, among the Democratic candidates, City Council Speaker Corey Johnson is in the lead, with 14 percent of support, followed by former financial journalist Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who garnered 9 percent of support.
The political newcomer joined anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” on Wednesday to talk about the results of the poll and her vision for the city, if she were to be elected.
Reacting to the poll, Caruso-Cabrera said that the results show that’s she building a broad coalition.
“When I talked to people, they are very excited about the fact that in a crowded field of mostly men, I’m the only woman polling near the top,” she said, “When I win this, I will be the only Latina, or Latino, for that matter, to have ever hold citywide office in New York City.”
When asked about her lack of experience as an elected official, she argued that her political independence, combined with her background in finances, make her the right person for the job.
“What voters definitely don’t want is another career politician, like the ones that I’m running against,” Caruso-Cabrera said.
“My real experience is actually about following the money," she added. "In my previous job, I covered financial crises all over the world, as a reporter, similar to what we’re experiencing now.”
Talking about her platform, she said that she will focus on bringing back jobs, supporting small businesses and returning investment back to the city.
“I am somebody who will be driven by outcomes, to make sure that when we spend money in New York, that we get what we need to turn the city around,” she said.
