Police say a man on a rampage killed one and injured several others, including two NYPD officers. The suspect was eventually arrested during a standoff with cops, some of it caught on camera. NY1's Lori Chung filed the following report.
Gunshots sent officers scrambling in Astoria on Sunday evening as police moved in to take a suspected killer into custody and end a violent rampage that left one man dead.
"It's really scary," said one eyewitness who saw the suspect being taken away in an ambulance.
Police say James Dillon slashed a woman in the face outside his 39th Street home around 11:30 a.m. Nearly four hours later, he allegedly attacked a 61-year-old man at a liquor store on Astoria Boulevard when the owner tried to help.
"The owner of the liquor store attempted to intervene, tried to push him out of the store and at that point that was when the owner of the liquor was stabbed," NYPD Deputy Chief John Essig said.
The wound was fatal for 55-year-old George Patouhas, who later died at Mt. Sinai Hospital, according to police. After the stabbing, police say Dillon then tried to set both men on fire.
"Steps out of the store and throws accelerant back into the store onto both males and attempted to light it on fire, which he did," Essig said.
The surviving victim suffered severe burns before the suspect took off again.
Police say they caught up to Dillon after a woman reported that a man was trying to break into her 36th Street apartment.
"The officers demanded the suspect drop a knife and bottle of accelerant he was carrying, he refused, the suspect then sprayed the officers with the liquid burning their hands and face," NYPD Chief Diane Pizzuti said.
That's when police say the officers opened fire, striking Dillon several times. Investigators recovered a knife and the bottle of accelerant at the scene.
Residents say Dillon often gave off a bad vibe.
"He was always walking around trying to intimidate people with his pit bull," one man said.
It is a stark contrast to the man he's accused of killing, a longtime landlord and business owner who friends say had a heart of gold.
"I never thought this would happen to him, he's a very generous man," one woman said.
"He was always helping people out, it's just the kind of person that he was,’ a neighbor added.
"He's just been the best guy I’ve ever met — helped everybody," another man said.
Police are trying to figure out the motive behind the attacks, but officials say Dillon suffered psychological problems. Relatives say the 23-year-old may have not been taking his medication.
Neighbors say Dillon is a frightening guy and they had problems with him before. One said she found him hiding on her property once and had to kick him out.
"Our encounters on the block have been very tense and menacing, just the way he looks at me and the things he would say, he would spew foul language towards me and my child," one woman said. "Those were my daily interactions whenever I saw him."
The NYPD said the injured police officers were taken to the hospital and are said to be in stable condition.
Two of the victims — the 61-year-old man and the woman slashed in the face — are also in stable condition, according to the police department.
