Wearing masks and shirts bearing the image and name of 10-year-old Ayden Wolfe, family and friends lined up outside Mount Hermon Baptist Church in the Bronx Tuesday to say farewells to the beloved boy who police say was killed by domestic violence.

“He shows you love, kindness, joy, excitement, he brought out the best in everybody, he was a positive kid," said family friend Jason Watson.

According to the NYPD, officers discovered Ayden unconscious in his apartment at the St. Nicholas Houses in Harlem on Saturday March 6.

The Medical Examiner classified the cause of death as battered child syndrome by homicide.

Ryan Cato, 34, who is the boyfriend of Ayden’s mother and lived with them, was later arrested and is now facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder.

Sadly, police say the day before Ayden’s death, officers initially responded to a 911 call reporting screaming and banging on fourth floor of the building, but not the apartment where the sounds came from. The officers didn’t find anything, and left.

“You know it leaves you feeling you wish something different could have happened, but that's the long and short of it," said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. "It's just a tragic, tragic case and you hope it never happens again.”

At the funeral, Pastor Joseph Jones said he is spreading the message not to just say goodbye to young Ayden, but to pledge to protect all children.

“We have to watch each other, watch out for each other, pay attention to each other, especially our children, they don’t understand all that’s going on so we have to watch for them," he said.

Jason Watson though, whose daughter Bria was friends with Ayden, said it wasn’t obvious the 10-year-old needed help.

“He was never showing signs of abuse or none of that, I would have known about it, I would have said something," he said.

So now as tears are shed, the investigation into a young boy’s death continues.
