The Park Planned Homes development was one of the first Modernist housing developments in the country. Initially, 60 units were planned but only 28 were built.

A progressively minded architect, Gregory Ain conceived the housing community as a groundbreaking social experiment, with affordable prefabricated homes for working families after World War II.

The neighborhood was designed to feel like a park, with continuous landscaping, no front fences, and innovative features like side-facing garages, interior courtyards and expansive glass walls. Twenty-one of the 28 homes were destroyed in the 2025 Eaton Fire.

Friends Of Residential Treasures: LA hosted an open call for architects and designers to reimagine one of Los Angeles’s architectural treasures lost to the devastating 2025 LA Fires, including the Park Planned Homes.

The entries and winners will be displayed at the Center for Communities on West Adams until May 1.
