Over at Doyle Auctioneers, it’s “Hello, Jerry!”

Personal items from the multi-award-winning tunesmith of “Hello, Dolly!”, “Mame”, and “La Cage aux Folles” Jerry Herman are currently on display to the public, and will be sold at auction on Thursday.

What You Need To Know

  • Over the summer, Doyle Auctioneers brought in more than $1.5 million when personal items from Broadway lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim went up for auction

  •  Sticking with notable musical theater composers, items from Jerry Herman’s estate will be auctioned off starting Thursday

  • Herman is most well known for his work on "Hello Dolly," "Mame," and "La Cage aux Folles"

Doyle’s appraisal department vice president Jon King helped put together more than 100 lots from Herman’s estate.

King spoke to NY1’s Frank DiLella about some of the standout items that are up for auction.

“Number one, the bugle that Angela Lansbury played in ‘Mame,’ and that was confirmed by the Smithsonian because the bugle was on exhibition there in 1996. There are all kinds of silver pieces that are inscribed from Angela Lansbury and Carol Channing, as well as a lot of different people within the theater business,” King said.

And keeping with the late Angela and Carol, the auction features personal letters sent to Herman by his longtime friends and leading ladies. One of the biggest items up for auction, and one that will probably go for a good chunk of change, is Herman’s piano.

“This he purchased in Los Angeles. He had it in his Beverly Hills house and then shipped it to Miami. It was made in 1995. It’s a Yamaha and there’s already been considerable interest in it,” King said.

During his decades-long career in show business, Herman was decorated with all kinds of awards, including four Tony Awards, The Kennedy Center Honor, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and much more.

“He was very active in the gay community. He did a lot of work for AIDS and he was recognized for all that. Just about every theater group you can imagine gave him an award,” King said.

The Jerry Herman auction will take place at Doyle Auctioneers and online on Nov. 14, and will benefit the Jerry Herman Programs of the ASCAP Foundation, a not-for-profit that serves the music industry.
