Carolines On Broadway is a special place for comedian Yamaneika Saunders.
"I’ve had some major gains here. I got my first Comedy Central audition though Caroline’s," Saunders said.
Saunders performed in the first show at Carolines on Broadway since the pandemic last week. It is one of the first live entertainment venues to reopen in the Theater District. Broadway shows are scheduled to open in the fall.
"It just feels great. You always need a space to perform your material to get it in front of audiences," Saunders said.
Saunders said she credits Caroline Hirsch for creating the iconic space for the NYC comedy scene decades ago.
"Caroline herself is so nice, sweet and amazing and an actual person. I think some people don't know that Caroline actually exists," Saunders said, laughing.
Hirsh implements strict safety protocols, including mask wearing when audience members are not eating or drinking.
"We have taken every step with the cleansing, social distancing, wearing a mask when you come into the room," Hirsch said.
The venue is also incorporating shows for fully vaccinated people.
Schumer is thrilled to see the venue open its doors and said it will receive funding from the federal 'Save Our Stages Act.' There is no word on the exact amount.
"Caroline will get money in the next month," Schumer said. "The lights are staying on, the comedians will keep coming, the seats will fill, and fill from Times Square to upstate. Our live venues and performances are back."
And comedians like Saunders are psyched to be back on stage.
"All of the audiences have been really excited to see comedy again. And we are excited to give it to them," Saunders said.
Carolines on Broadway will soon celebrate its 40-year anniversary.
