It’s girl and star power on the small screen in the new musical comedy series "Girls5eva."

The show, which is being executive produced by Tina Fey and her husband, Jeff Richmond, centers around a one-hit wonder 90s pop group as they reunite 20 years later. The principal cast features Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Busy Philipps and Tony winner for "Hamilton," Renée Elise Goldsberry.

  • The musical comedy series follows a one-hit wonder 90s pop group making a comeback

"It’s a dream. Even if it hadn't been in the middle of a global pandemic where I couldn't leave my house, unless somebody paid to COVID test me, I would have been ecstatic to do this job," enthused Goldsberry.

Philipps plays Summer and Pell takes on Gloria. Both actresses say in a way this show is a commentary on the female experience in modern society.

"Our characters realize how we were used in ways,” Pell said. “I mean, we still had fun and we look back at it, it was like, 'Oh, we were a pop group,' but then it's like, 'Wait, someone else owned all our stuff?' I think that's so, so relatable just in everyday life."

"We were raised in a time when like, the Monica Lewinsky scandal happened and she was 21 years old and yet was the one that was labeled and ridiculed,” Philipps said. “And not wanting those things to be true for younger generations like our kids or our nieces or younger people coming up in the same industries that we work in.”

The New York based series was shot entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting experience for all.

"There are some real tricky parts when you're trying to do music where you used to be able to get into a music studio. We can't do that as much anymore," said Richmond, who composed the music for the series and also serves as an executive producer. “So there was a lot of stuff of recording voices to lip sync to, and some occasions from afar.”

The stars agree: one of the biggest themes of the show is that you can always reinvent oneself.

"Absolutely. It's never too late. That's something I need to remember," concluded Goldsberry. “It's healing to me as I still have really, really big dreams and I'm getting older and I need to rekindle some of that hope."
