BIG BEAR, Calif. — Jackie and Shadow’s two young eagle chicks officially have their names nearly a month after hatching.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley announced Tuesday that Big Bear Elementary School students chose Sunny and Gizmo from a list of 30 to be the names of the chicks from the famous eagle parents.

Students from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade selected the names. They chose Sunny as the name of the bigger chick, and Gizmo for the smaller one. Friends of Big Bear Valley officials said 469 students voted this year.

After the chicks hatched, Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and advocacy, invited the public to submit name suggestions. The nonprofit, which livestreams the famous eagle family, received over 54,000 submissions.

Everyone who submitted a winning name will receive a certificate, the nonprofit officials said.

“We’re thrilled by how excited people were for the chance to name these two adorable chicks. And the Big Bear elementary students had tons of fun voting for their favorite names,” Friends of Big Bear Executive Director Sandy Steers said in a statement. “All the students have been learning about Jackie and Shadow and their chicks. It was great to add a little reward for all their hard work.”

Other finalist names included Skye, Crackle, Griffen, Cloud, Sully and many more.

After years without successfully hatching chicks, Jackie and Shadow hatched three healthy chicks in their nest this year.

Shortly after the third chick hatched, a heavy snowstorm brought two feet of snow to the Big Bear area, filling the nest high with snow.

Jackie and Shadow were able to protect their first two chicks, but sadly, the third chick didn’t make it through the storm, officials said. The baby chick was found in the nest after the snow melted.
