It has been 15 years since one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent history.
It was on January 12, 2010 in Haiti when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near the capital city of Port-au-Prince toppling building, including historic structures. Streets and other infrastructure were also destroyed.
In the following days, there were powerful aftershocks.
The number of Haitians killed during the natural disaster ranges from 100,000 to more than 300,000.
NY1’s Dean Meminger and other members of the team traveled to Haiti 15 years ago to cover the search and recovery efforts.
Rescuers and medical professionals from around the world, including from New York City, arrived in the poverty-stricken country to help in whatever way they could.
Along with the massive deaths toll, tens of thousands were injured and left homeless.
