Babka is a traditional Jewish dessert now widely available at many supermarkets, including Trader Joe’s. On the label and in product descriptions online, Trader Joe’s claims its babka is made by “a small, kosher bakery in Brooklyn.”

But the truth is more complicated.

Andrew Silverstein, a reporter with The Forward, traced the origin of the babka sold today at Trader Joe’s to a humble family bakery in Borough Park nearly a century ago. He joined “Weekends On 1” to tell anchor Rocco Vertuccio more about what he learned along the way.
