A rezoning proposal is now in the works for Jamaica, Queens. While still in its early stages, the plan envisions nearly 12,000 new homes, and more than 1 million square feet of new commercial space.
The plan would focus on creating growth on more than 300 blocks, particularly the immediate area around Jamaica’s Long Island Railroad station and its multiple subway and bus routes.
On Sutphin Boulevard, the vision is for new high-rise apartment buildings on sites where single-story shops currently exist, along with bike lanes and bus shelters.
On Jamaica Avenue, the plan calls for new construction as high as 11 stories as part of a new “downtown core”.
The plan has support among elected officials in Queens, including Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. Stephanie Simon spoke with him on NY1 Saturday afternoon.
