An average of 4 million riders take the subway every day, and within the transit system, an average of 6.1 major crimes occur per day, according to the NYPD. This accounts for 2% of overall crime in the city.

Following Thursday’s incident in which a man was shot in the head on board a northbound A train in Brooklyn, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry joined anchor Dean Meminger Sunday to discuss crime in the subway system.

Daughtry stressed the subways are safe and said he has been tasked by the police commissioner with finding new ways to ultilize technology in the subway system. He said he is looking at a way to integrate the current cameras in the subway system with technology that can detect weapons.
