Ed Kranepool, a Mets legend who played more games with the team than any other player in its history, has died, the Mets announced Monday.
Kranepool, a city native who attended James Monroe High School in the Bronx, debuted with the club as a 17-year-old during its first season in 1962 and was a member of the Mets' 1969 World Series-winning team. He was also an MLB All-Star in 1965.
His 1,853 games played as a Met still stand as a club record, and his 1,418 hits as a Met were a club record from his retirement in 1979 until 2012, when David Wright passed him. Kranepool remains third on the Mets' all-time hits list, behind Wright and Jose Reyes.
The team said Kranepool died Sunday at his home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was 79 years old.
